Cast Media Group Journalist of the Year – Frank Gardner

Picture

Frank Gardner received his award from Andy Watts, Managing Director of Cast Media
Frank Gardner is an inspiring, tenacious and hardworking BBC Security Correspondent who was injured while reporting and is now a wheelchair user. Frank has reshaped reporting in the high-profile area of international security issues, changing how news organisations view disabled reporters. He has reported on men and women with disabilities and he also reported this year from Bahrain on the civil unrest. This entry focuses on Frank’s report from the Arctic: Walking with the Wounded. These reports from Arctic Svarlbard broke new ground in reporting a mission undertaken by injured servicemen – predominantly amputees - to walk unaided to the North Pole, covered  by a wheelchair-using reporter. Frank followed the troops, a perilous journey for any journalist, let alone a man who was unable to walk the frozen terrain.
