Deutsche Post DHL Group was tonight (29 November) named HSBC Company of the Year at the Heathrow-sponsored European Diversity Awards, becoming the first German company to carry off the much coveted award since the prestigious event first launched in 2010. PwC won the Accenture Social Mobility Initiative of the Year Award while French energy giant EDF, and insurance company AIG, were also presented with trophies.
Dr Ranj Singh, who co-created and presented the CBeebies show Get Well Soon from 2012 to 2015 and who shot to fame on ITV’s This Morning won the award for Media Icon of the Year, while one of the biggest cheers of the night was reserved for Northern Ireland based Paper Owl Films who won the Rabobank Marketing Campaign of the Year Award for their groundbreaking series Pablo, which focuses on autism for pre-schoolers with an almost entirely autistic cast. Paper Owl’s Jake Williamson, 12, became the youngest winner ever to take to the stage in the history of the awards.
John Holland-Kaye, CEO of headline sponsor Heathrow, spoke passionately about Heathrow’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, while trans power couple Hannah and Jake Graf delivered a moving and well-received speech on their experiences of being transgender.

Linda Riley, who founded the European Diversity Awards, paid tribute to the winners. She said:
Everyone nominated for a European Diversity Award should feel proud, because they have contributed to making Europe a more accepting, diverse continent. We have made giant strides but, during this era of great uncertainty, there is still a lot more to do which is why these awards are so important. Not a year goes by when winners on this stage do not bring tears to my eyes. I hear stories from previous winners all the time who tell me that, as a result of these awards, companies have vastly increased their commitment to diversity, and I’m told that past winners are frequently invited to speak at events and pass on their diversity knowledge |
